Perhaps.
Most roads that used letters actually went with ABCD as you suggest.
But strangely enough, ATSF (and i just found this out myself) went LABC (L
for "lead" presumably).
The letter actually appears in the number board so the number we got (on the
sticker) probably should have been 3xxL or 3xxC
Not that it matters hugely, but you did ask.
