I just fiddled with it. What actually prevents it from working is not
the center tie, but the tubes on the bottom of the grey conductors
without pin holes, or the tubes and pin holes on those grey conductors
with pin holes. Why is this so, because if you look at the bottom of the
conductors, the grey ones have the metal tabs which hold the metal to
the plastic offset one stud towards the ends of the rails from the blue
ones. If there weren't so many tubes, the blue connector part would fit
up against the center tie and still make contact with the metal tabs.
In any case, there are indeed three different, incompatible, ways to
connect power to the center rails.
What annoys me most however is that the blue conductor rails have a pair
of ridges across the center on the underside which PREVENT one from
using a center tie to match the tie spacing of the grey track. Of course
you could use a pair of 2x3 plates with a 2x2 tile, but that would
really only work for straight track which is attached to baseplates or
other "ground".
