US does not use the "o" part. There was a long thread on this in RTL I
think, where I pontificated at length.
Some US examples:
A (GM) DD40AX is a D-D (hence the model designation) 2 trucks, 4 axles
each. I think the trucks have steerable outer axles
A (GE) U50BB is a BB-BB (4 trucks, all 2 axle powered, span bolster per
end for each pair of trucks)
A (Baldwin) Babyface Centipede is a 2-F-2 (idler 2axle truck, 6 axle
central frame powered, idler 2 axle truck) I think... might be
misremembering
A (GE/ALCO?) GG1 is a 2-C-C-2 (2 axle idler, 3 axle powered subframe,
articulation point, powered subframe, idler) I think.. might be
misremembering
A (Alco)PA1 is an A1A-A1A - 2 trucks. powered-idler-powered per truck
A (GM)FL9 dual mode (diesel and straight electric) is an A1A-B One truck
is just two powered axles.
Most modern North American diesels (like 99%+ of them) are either B-B or
C-C as all the exotic wheel arrangments either don't work, or aren't
worth the extra maintenance. expense.

| (...) Well it's correct for steam locomotives and shunters (switchers) (counting the wheels) but there is a newer system for diesel and electric locomotives: Powered Axles are given letters A=1, B=2, etc. Unpowered axles are given numbers for each (...) (26 years ago, 26-May-99, to lugnet.trains)
