They don't answer questions about why they do or don't do certain things.

I seem to recall something about three to four designing Technic. I might be
mistaken though.

Some probably has to do with that.

TLC tries to include new colors.

Yep. It costs a lot of money to produce the molds.

Bionicle sells, that's the harsh reality.

That probably has to do with LEGO Poland.

I don't think LEGO can lower their prices too much either, they still have
costs producing the sets, material and everything around the sets, it's not
just bricks - unfortunately.

Never heard of COBI, Sweden is pretty free from clones, but the bricks are far
more expensive then in the US, mostly due to different taxes (25% VAT on LEGO).

I'd say they are growing in Sweden again, 2003 will be a great year with LEGO
going back to their roots and all.
Here's some interesting reading that might shed some light:
(more at: http://www.lego.com/build/ask/archive.asp )
"How long does it take LEGO to come up with a new model?
Thats a question that even The Great Redini cant truly answer! Anyone whos
built a LEGO model can tell you that some creations are easier to make than
others. Just look at some of the tiny models from LEGO Creator -- how long do
you think it takes LEGO experts to design a creation with only six or seven
pieces? Now, LEGO TECHNIC and LEGO MINDSTORMS are a whole other story.
Finishing the final version of a complicated product can take years, especially
if it includes several models for you to build. But The Fantastic Redini will
try to be a little more specific... for a new LEGO TECHNIC vehicle it usually
takes about five or six months of solid work. One cool LEGO MINDSTORMS set took
about a year, which is pretty typical when things go smoothly.
On the other hand, inspiration can strike as quickly as lightning. One LEGO
Master Builder built a new robotic model in just three days! Of course, it had
to be refined a bit after that, but to go from an idea to a nearly-finished
model in 3 days? The Fantastic Redini was impressed.
How many Master Builders are there?
Well, inside the LEGO Company, there are around 200 people designing and
building all kinds of things -- from LEGO Duplo to LEGO MINDSTORMS to the huge
creations at the LEGOLAND parks. But you know, The Magnificent Redini can see
far and wide, and I see thousands and thousands and thousands of Master
Builders in the world... maybe youre one of them, hmmm?"
