Yes, but 8448 is a 99 set. For 2000 there are now five holed and a
fifteen holed beams with no studs (and rounded ends), which appear
to be a replacements for the 5 and 15 holed studded technic beams.
I'll bet that in the next couple years we'll see 3, 7, 9, 11 and 13
holed non-studded beams (and perhaps even number holed beams too).
IMHO, the studded technic beam will be gone in a matter of 5 years
or less. It will be interesting to see if sets 8457 and 8458 use
the new non-holed beams. It's clear from the pictures that they
do at least use some studded beams, but I'll bet they use the non
studded replacements also.
FWIW, as long as Lego keeps making Technic models as good as this
years and last years (the droids especially) then I'm not going
to complain -- studded beams or not. :)
