Yah, Ebay can be a good source. However, the problem is that the
availability of parts is inconsistent and should you finally find something
you want, you have to outbid someone to get it. And you have to search quite
a bit to find stuff too (it's not all nicely catagorized like Brickbay).
Also, don't forget that many Brickbay sellers obtain their parts and sets
from Ebay.

If you have a project and need a certain amount of blue Technic beams of a
certain size, then it's probably better to go with Brickbay or Lego S@H.

All the problems you mention with Ebay are reduced here in the U.K because
it's smaller, although you still have to outbid people. Brickbay or Lego s@h
aren't much good if you're trying to get your lego on the cheap. You can
hide wrong coloured beams inside a vehicle but that's not much good on a
crane jib etc.

I think appropriating material's is just another skill in the technic
builder's arsenal. Those who can get the stuff they require can complete
their model's. We could grouse about the beam's availability for age's but
it won't change anything. Like someone else said, I think an approach to
Lego citing Mindstorm's popularity would have the most likely hood of
producing new part packs.
