Here's another idea: The 8480 Technic Space Shuttle. This set is regarded by
most Technic fans as the greatest Technic set ever. I don't own one, but
I've seen a parts list:

and it contains an excellent selection of parts.
Right now it's available from Lego shop at home as one of their "specials":

I think you have to phone them to get it.
Also, set 8480 can sometimes be found for sale on Brickbay.
