Re: Backlash in Lego Gear Trains

Aren't the new style "fat" gears much tighter? KL (...) (25 years ago, 9-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)

Re: Backlash in Lego Gear Trains

Try to measure the quantity you are interested in as directly as possible. If you have to count rotations do it at the output of the gear train not the input. For a given quality of gear (TLC's gears are certainly not AGMA 10s !) you have to strike (...) (25 years ago, 9-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)

Re: Backlash in Lego Gear Trains

(...) If you are building a scanning thing, this works really well. I built a camera that used the Lego light sensor, and I would get zig-zags between scan lines. I changed the software to wind it all the way back and scan from the same direction (...) (25 years ago, 9-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)

Re: Shame, Shame...."plastic" rubber tires in new technic

The plastic wheels work well when you cannot use a clutch gear or pulley belt to protect a motor from excessive resistance. Rrubber wheels do not yield well on some driving surfaces when an obstacle stops the vehicle. Plastic wheels spin and, so, (...) (25 years ago, 9-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic, lugnet.edu)

Re: Backlash in Lego Gear Trains

Same problem. The more you try to reduce backlash, the more friction you get. ROSCO "Chris Mattson" <mattson@byu.edu> wrote in message news:G6v27B.GAn@lugnet.com... (...) (25 years ago, 8-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)

Re: Backlash in Lego Gear Trains

If you working on a Mindstorms project, then measure your position as close to the output of your gear train as possible. This will eliminate the effect of backlash on your positioning. However if the gear train is expected to hold the final (...) (25 years ago, 8-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)

Re: Backlash in Lego Gear Trains

Jerry, Precise positioning is my objective. And of course too much friction is a problem. I have'nt fooled around with this too much but, the LEGO gears, as designed, have too much backlash for my project (and as you suggest probably to keep the (...) (25 years ago, 8-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)

Re: Backlash in Lego Gear Trains

Chris, it depends on your point of view. As backlash gets less and less, gear train friction gets more and more. The friction is somewhat between the gears but mostly in the shaft bearings where additional force comes to bear. Unless you need (...) (25 years ago, 8-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)

Model Team scale Lamborghini Diablo 6.0

I believe my LEGO Diablo phase has come to an end...I think I have finally succeeded in creating a likeness (but that's for you to decide). Modeled after the latest Diablo, my LEGO rendition is fully motorized (with a geared motor and a micromotor (...)   Re: New Roborider, Lego racers found

(...) Agreed. The whole "virus on the web" thing on the web site doesn't really make sense. "Bikes with human brains" is passible, but there's no particular reason for it either. The dudes on the wheels is just to give us something else to buy again (...) (25 years ago, 8-Jan-01, to lugnet.general, lugnet.technic)

Re: Lego Weight Elements -- Anyone use them?

Chris Mattson wrote in message ... (...) Definitely. I have over a dozen of these and use them for cranes. At one point, I ran out and had to use boat weights. [1] For Technic, boat weights are obviously a poor substitute for the 2x6 weights. [1] (...) (25 years ago, 7-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)

  Re: How rare is...

(...) White is becoming less rare. Back in the days when Technic was The Only Theme That Matters (TM) all cross axles were black and all technic elements were gray. Now anything goes. But the current design is available in: Black -- 2, 2 w/notches, (...) (25 years ago, 7-Jan-01, to lugnet.db.inv, lugnet.general, lugnet.technic)

  Roborider 7: The Boss

I just picked it up today and it's a GREAT set. The model TLC is billing as the main model (more likely the alternate though) is OK (the one with the bike and the glider), but the three-part one is WONDERFUL. It has excellent playability and it (...) (25 years ago, 7-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)

Re: New Roborider, Lego racers found

And who exactly do they fight? Nobody knows, as Lego can't make up its (...) (25 years ago, 6-Jan-01, to lugnet.general, lugnet.technic)

Modification + Short Supply of Parts = Help Needed

I've recently been trying to modify my #8444. My planned modifications, and the problems they've caused: -Opening cockpit (simple modification, really) Without being bolted down in front, the cockpit partially loses its shape. No biggie, though. (...) (25 years ago, 6-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)

  Backlash in Lego Gear Trains

Fellow Lego Engineers, Does anybody have a good solution to the ever-so-common problem of backlash in lego gear trains? Help, Chris Mattson (25 years ago, 6-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)

  Re: How rare is...

They were used as masts in 314 and 315, two of the old ships-series. They were also used in the old Model-team: the Harley and the Norton (393 & 394) feature a few as axles, footrests and antenna. The Rolls Royce (395) uses one for its steering (...) (25 years ago, 6-Jan-01, to lugnet.db.inv, lugnet.general, lugnet.technic)

Re: 8880 Super Car motorization ideas?

This subject was thrashed fairly thoroughly a number of months ago, and I remember that the conclusion is no, not if the engine and transmission is left assembled as instructed. Now that the news search function is reestablished, you have a chance (...) (25 years ago, 6-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)
