Has anyone ever tried to design a washing machine mechanism? —Geoffrey Hyde
I'm wondering if anyone has ever given this a go - specifically, the top-loading variety. Of particular interest would be how to recreate the agitator gearing mechanism so that it moves back and forth separately from the bowl. Then there is the (...)      (...) I don't know about the agitator, but with enough gears, you can speed up the rotation from a single motor quite easily. With 4 pairs of 24-tooth gears driving 8-tooth gears, I created a hand-cranked fan with incredible speed. So as long as the (...) (24 years ago, 26-Jul-00, to lugnet.technic)

Hmmm - but that was hand-cranked. Did you try applying a motor to it, and see if it could take on the same amount of torque? Rotational speed isn't the only factor to take into account, there is also the torsional component. To make a half-decent (...) (24 years ago, 27-Jul-00, to lugnet.technic)

(...) I never hooked up a motor to it (mainly because the only motor I had at the time was in use in another model), so I don't know for sure, but IIRC it didn't involve much torque, once I tweaked the bushings to keep the gears meshed without (...)      (...) How about a front-loading washing machine? No agitator. <PLUG> Here's something else you can do with geared-up motors: (URL) </PLUG> (24 years ago, 28-Jul-00, to lugnet.technic)

(...) Duplo set 2983 includes a barrel that's about 6 studs in diameter by 9 or 10 high. You'd need to drill the bottom for the agitator axle, but I think that's only a "venial" sin among purists, compared to introducing a "foreign element" ;-) (...)     (...) On ours, the "fan" (disk with vertical blades) at the bottom turns with the agitator one way and spins freely the other way. Also, the agitator turns further in the direction where it pulls clothes down, such that overall, it turns in that (...) (24 years ago, 28-Jul-00, to lugnet.technic)
