In lugnet.technic, Chris Langstaff writes:
I was more curious to know if the lift mechanism on 8479 is worth owning.  As
for more Technic sets, I definitely agree Lego should put out
more 'appropriate' sets.  Those Throwbot things do not interest me at all.
More pneumatics (especially like 8459, which is a favourite) or spring-loaded
parts (e.g., 8448 and 8880) would be best - I just think Lego is running out
of ideas.

The lift mechanism shows a simple yet ingenious use of the flex system. I have
incorporated this claw into several of my Mindstorms robots, and it has become
my favorite part in the whole 8479 set.

To me, there are two limitations in this lift mechanism: 1) It put a great
strain into its turning axle, as the result it is not suitable for lifting
heavy objects. However, for the light weight things like Technic tires or fake
recycle beans, it should be fine. 2) It is difficult to change the dimensions
of this claw, because the flex cables it uses are only available in certain
lengths.

There may be ways to overcome these two limitations, and I'd like to learn
about them.

So to answer your question: The lift mechanism on 8479 is worth studying, and
8479 comes with tons of useful spare parts too (mostly in green and black).
Unlike 8480, the 8479 truck looks ugly, so you get to actually dismantle it
and reuse its parts! The Code Pilot is a waste, unless you also happen to own
the RDS Scout, in which case you may be able to use the Scout to communicate
with the Code Pilot using VLL.

I used to think that Lego is running out of ideas, until I saw 8002 the
Destroyer Droid. This is a technic set without studs and gears, but what a
clever mechanism! Be sure to get you one, even if you have never watched the
Starwars movies. Besides, 8002 comes with two flex cables in brown!

(...) I agree that it is a very cool set. The mechanism and the design is indeed very clever. But what an instructions manual! If I had one dollar for every mistake I found in the instructions, the 8002 would have been a cheap buy. Most of the (...) (25 years ago, 26-Mar-00, to lugnet.technic)

(...) I spoke to Lego S@H about two weeks ago - they said 8479 is still in stock for $164 USD, but I didn't ask how many they have. I'm on the fence as to whether I should jump on one. I just spent close to $300 on ebay recently so it's a question (...) (25 years ago, 24-Mar-00, to lugnet.technic)
