Is 8479 Barcode Multi Set worth buying?

I've read mixed reviews about 8479 Barcode Set, but I can't help but be
fascinated by the mechanism that lifts objects over the cab of the truck into
the back. Is it a worthwhile investment?
What I'd ultimately like to build is a garbage truck - like the ones that lift
the bins over the front of the truck, then turn the bin and dump the garbage
in the back. I could do this with my 'regular' technic pieces, but it would
require a lot of ingenuity (I'm not an engineer or robotics expert). Has
anyone tried this?
On that note, a garbage truck that loads from the back would be even better -
like the 6693 from Town series, only larger and with Technic pieces. Perhaps
compacting the garbage with spring-loaded or pneumatic parts?
Anyone have any ideas or advice?

| (...) well, not being a builder, or a lego engineer (I wish), I must say I had a lot of fun building the barcode set. I even built one of the alternate models, which I don't normally do. | (...) Hi Chris My message didn't go with my last post. You may want to call lego about the barcode set,to see if stock is low. They no longer list the set on the web site or in the catalog. They no longer show many Technic sets. The only sets still (...) (25 years ago, 24-Mar-00, to lugnet.technic)

| I'm a fan of the 8479. The code pilot is just a smarter-than-average battery box, but the set itself has lots of good parts, lots of gears, lots of green beams, plates and angle pieces, plus green cross axles! The truck itself is cool and works (...) (25 years ago, 24-Mar-00, to lugnet.technic)
