"Expert Builder" sets was the official name of Technic sets in U.S.A.
starting from the year of its creation (1977) until 1986. In the rest of the
world (well at least in Canada and Europe), they were called Technical sets
from the very beginning, and started using the Technic name in 1982 if I'm
not mistaken.
Personally, before browsing the Lego sites, I didn't even know about the
existence of the term "Expert Builder", because they were all called
Technical/Technic sets from the beginning in Canada, and all catalogs we got
in our sets were the European ones, even if we didn't get some of the sets
we saw there (we got what the USA got). A good example is the 8680 arctic
base in the 1986 Technic catalog.
