I've modified quite a few of my parts to create new ones. For those of us lucky to have tens of thousands of pieces in our collection, cutting up a few pieces doesn't hurt too much. Axles can be cut to just about any length under 12L. I was making (...) (26 years ago, 4-Apr-01, to lugnet.technic)

(...) The holes can be used to attached a pulley to the wheel to motorize it, ie. if you're going with a rubber band drive as opposed to a direct gear drive. I imagine a train person could also use the hole to do a piston kind of thing, too. George (26 years ago, 4-Apr-01, to lugnet.technic)

I like the holes on the wheels. It makes them more versatile, as you can connect various things to them. Besides, when making construction equipment vehicles or something similar, the holes make the wheels look properly rugged. And as you say (...) (26 years ago, 4-Apr-01, to lugnet.technic)

It's not so much the "conical" gear that takes the backlash out of the setup that Bob Fay provided links to, but the ability to use the technic axles as torsion springs and keep the gear teeth in the train loaded at all times.
