Gail, based on my own disappointing experience in helping
to establish a sorting regime for my 8 year-old twins and their 4
year old brother, I can say that for my kids, it doesn't work.

Heehee, doesn't sound very encouraging, Ralph!

Mind you, they have about a half garbage can full of Lego, so there
is rather a lot to sort. The one twin that is the Lego fanatic has
an incredible mess all over his floor, but some of his models are
really astounding.

The mess on the floor sounds familiar! My kids have only recently begun
collecting Lego and so they haven't created many models other than the main
model which comes with the instruction sheet for each set. Once they get
their sets built for each theme, they 'play' with them: role playing for the
characters and acting out adventures with the mini figs.

We've resorted to only giving him a decent sized Rubbermaid tub full
but it's still all over the place. Eventually, he will come around
to the fact that a sorted collection is easier to build from.

I think at least the older one is beginning to realize that it will be
easier to build even the main models from sorted Lego pieces. Perhaps HE can
help me sort them!

If your kids are  able to sort without it being a big pain for
you, then you have my deepest envy...

So far I am the one doing the sorting and it is a bit of a pain, but since
their collections are still relatively small it isn't too bad yet. If I come
across a method for my kids being able to sort without it being a pain for
me, I will be sure to let you know...

Thanks for the reply!

My children ages 4, 6 and 8 recently began their LEGO collections, and I am beginning by collecting one particular theme for myself. At this time they are interested in the themes and not interchanging the pieces to build new creations. <snipped (...) (23 years ago, 19-Feb-01, to lugnet.storage)
