I'm replying to an old message I found here.
The simplest sorting method is always the best when it comes to children.
The WORST thing you can do to a young child is make playing with lego a
chore. NEVER make him sort it by piece and only by type (brick, plate,
tire, minifig, etc..) if he wants to. That is something adults with a lot
of time do.
Remember themes change over time. He will eventually move to a new theme.
While the collection is releatively small (tub 12"x12"x12"), I would suggest
leaving it unsorted. It is easier for the child to pick up his legos if he
doesn't have to keep sorting it.
Once the collection gets large, you can sort the pieces by color. Children
can usually sort by color very quickly.
If his collection continues to grow you will find that he will come up with
his own sorting methods. Make sure that you buy him the tubs he needs to
sort the lego.

| My children ages 4, 6 and 8 recently began their LEGO collections, and I am beginning by collecting one particular theme for myself. At this time they are interested in the themes and not interchanging the pieces to build new creations. Right now (...) (24 years ago, 19-Feb-01, to lugnet.storage)
