#7191 UCS X-Wing brief review

Well, after passing my driving test on the first try I decided to get myself
a present to celebrate. Armed with TLG's coupon for $15 off, I headed to my
local TRU (Emeryville, CA). They had all the new SW sets including the
Millenium Falcon (I'll definitely be waiting for clearance on that one!). I
deliberated momentarily over the TIE Interceptor, but decided I wanted the
Rebel workhorse.
It took me about five hours to build and overall, I think it's a totally
ballsy set. The proportions and detail are quite nice, especially the area
to the rear of the cockpit. All the new specialtly pieces are quite
intriguing, especially the 1x4 gray bricks with four sidestuds. I really
only have three grips to list:
1. Lackluster presentation once the box is opened: there's just a bunch of
bags rattling around inside along with the instructions and decal sheets.
This resulted in one of the stickers peeling off and attaching to the
instruction sheet. Not a big deal for me since I didn't plan to apply most
of them anyway. It would have been nice if TLG had put one of those cool
clear plastic trays in the box to display some of the unique pieces from the
set. It's like thery just threw everything in the box and taped it shut. A
little haphazard if you ask me.
2. The cockpit doesn't close completely. I would prefer that there was a
row of studs to secure the forward edge and have the glass seat firmly. A
litte reengineering should fix this. Any suggestions?
3. My wings are not completely straight. When closed, both pairs are
angled slightly upwards. It's not really noticeable when they're open, but
when they're closed, it looks funny. Has anyone else experienced this and
found a solution? I was thinking of tearing down the gearbox and tinkering
with it, but I wanted to get some suggestions first.
These are minor quibbles however, as this set is the coolest Lego set I've
built ever. It's just so damn BIG! Now I just need to find a suitable
pilot. Someone mentioned that the Kenner pilot figure works fairly well,
I'm gonna have to try it.

| The Kenner figure works pretty good. It's a tight fit, and I had to do some disassembly of the cockpit to get him in, but otherwise - it's a nice fit. A side note - the Tie Fighter cockpit has much more room and it's quite easy to fit a pilot in. (...) (24 years ago, 1-Sep-00, to lugnet.starwars)

| (...) Mine ended up angled slightly upwards, too. I think this is intentional. If you look closely at the instructions, when the mechanism is set to the position where the wings would be open, the top brackets are angled very high and the bottom (...) (24 years ago, 1-Sep-00, to lugnet.starwars)
