Scott Castello already answered your question, but I should add that it
is also included to the new edition original trilogy. It can be seen as
lifting of from Mos Eisley while Obi Wan and Luke are approaching to the
city with Luke's Land Speeder.
Reading the expanded universe novels of course a good thing, as again
Scott already mentioned, but there is also quite nice reference
materials around. I suggest "Essential Guide to ..." series for example,
especially ".. to Vehicles and Vessels". There are also several other
books from the series as "... to Characters", "... to Planets and
Moons", "... to Droids", "... to Weapons and Technology" and "Essential
Chronology".
There is also another book called "Star Wars Encyclopedia", and it
includes many many things from many many Star Wars material as short
encyclopedic entries.
There are also several DK books, ("Star Wars Visual Dictionary" and
"Star Wars Incredible Cross Sections" books, both for original trilogy
and Episode 1) and "Behind The Magic" series of CDs (again both for
original trilogy and Episode 1) from the Lucas Arts itself, but they are
mainly focused on the things seen actually in the movies.
Another mostly-the-original-trilogy type of reference is "Star Wars
Technical Journal". Although I don't like it much, it has nice folded
large inset pics of the major things like star destroyers and main rebel
fighters.
