It's even worse when the red 'R2 Unit'[3] is thrown in for
consideration.  This one isn't a main character, doesn't even have a
name, and is made out of more-or-less reusable parts.

Didn't the movie name these "red ones".  Wasn't it something
like R2-D3 or some variant on R2-D2.  I don't remember now.

There was a "Red one" with a different head (more angular, as opposed to a
smooth dome) in the scene where Luke buys C-3PO and R2-D2 from the jawas.  In
fact, he and Uncle Owen at first buy the "Red one", who breaks down and is
replaced by R2-D2.  The "Red one"'s name is R5-D4.

What is interesting to me (as someone who is way too into Lego and Star Wars
for his own good) is that they chose to make this pseudo R5-D4.  It clearly
ISN'T R5-D4, since (as I mentioned above) R5-D4 has a differently shaped head.
If you watch the scenes where the rebel pilots are getting ready to launch to
go and git the Death Star, though, you'll note an endless variety of colors of
r2-d2 shaped 'droids.  I think they also reused to R5-D4 body here (and why
not?).

But, anyway, they weren't named in the movie, only in everything else (figures,
novels, etc).

The red one was R5-D4 and the 'Encyclopedia of Star Wars' claims R2-D2 persuaded it to blow its own motivator so that he could stay with C3-P0. Now, this in some way helps support my arguments that not only was R2 a jedi, but partially controlling (...) (26 years ago, 29-Jan-99, to lugnet.starwars)
