It's interesting, though, that even though OWK faked out Maul enough to be
able to defeat him, he didn't fake out Maul so badly that he didn't sense
his own demise. (My take on it.)

I shouldn't say that quite like that. Vader originally wanted to put Luke
into carbon freeze and transport him back to the Emperor. Failing that, and
realize that Luke was much stronger than he'd forseen, he quickly realized
that he had to begin playing mind games with Luke -- telling him that he was
his father and all that, and letting him go if necessary. Actually, now I'm
not sure why Vader didn't jump down after Luke to follow him. Maybe that
just wasn't Vader's style, or it's proof that Vader wanted Luke to escape
and plant some dark seeds in Luke's mind.
