I've been thinking about ways to fix it, and a couple nights ago, as I was
sorting through my old sets, evaluating them for trades, I came across two
of my oldest sets: Brickyard and Road Construction Crew. Both of these sets
had 4x4 black turntables. Unlike the modern version, which is a round
turntable on top of a square plate, these are two half-height rounds on top
of each other, so the entire piece is round.

Two layers of Macaroni bricks would work well, too.  It would make the engines
longer and you'd have to alternate them, but I think it would work.

How would that work?  You'd still end up with odd
tile edges.  The happy thing is that I also have both
of those ancient sets, so I have a pair of those round
4x4 turntables!  AFAIK, they were never in any
   colour but black.

But you know what *would* work...the Mega Bloks
4x4 turntable in grey--it's completely round.  *ducking
inevitable objects that will be thrown for that bit of
   heresy*

(...) Actually, they have been made in red too (I've got some from set 570), and also in white if I'm not mistaken. (...) Hehe. But it won't be my 4x4 plateless turntables I'm throwing... -Tom McD. when replying, use a plate with your spamcake. (26 years ago, 14-May-99, to lugnet.starwars)

I have a pair of those round (...) I have a few in white. No idea which set they came from, though. Dave (26 years ago, 14-May-99, to lugnet.starwars)

(...) What do you mean "odd tile edges"? You shouldn't need to use tiles at all. To make a stable cylinder with macaroni bricks, you have to rotate each layer by 45 degrees. Do this with two layers and it should work fine. Of course, to get 16 gray (...) (26 years ago, 14-May-99, to lugnet.starwars)
