Making accurate Y-Wing engines

The only thing that really ever bugged me about the new Y-Wing is the
improperly oriented engine struts. If you attached a 4x4 square plate to the
engine, the struts should be at the corners, not in the middle of the sides,
as they are.

I've been thinking about ways to fix it, and a couple nights ago, as I was
sorting through my old sets, evaluating them for trades, I came across two
of my oldest sets: Brickyard and Road Construction Crew. Both of these sets
had 4x4 black turntables. Unlike the modern version, which is a round
turntable on top of a square plate, these are two half-height rounds on top
of each other, so the entire piece is round.

These work great! Substitute them for the light gray 4x4 cylinder brick. It
can either attach properly and be swiveled or you can even attach it 45
degrees off, and not swivel it. It also hold its position, so you don't end
up with engine struts that keep going around.

The only problem is that the color is off, and I doubt that Lego ever made
these things in light gray.

Does anyone here do custom pieces?

(...) Two layers of Macaroni bricks would work well, too. It would make the engines longer and you'd have to alternate them, but I think it would work. Jeff (26 years ago, 13-May-99, to lugnet.starwars)
