But I think the question is why didn’t they come out of hyperspace on the
moon-side of the gas giant? I know there’s some kind of “thou shalt not go
near a gravity well whilst in hyperspace,” so is that the answer?

The system they were coming from was on the other side of the planet. A
fortunate coincidence for the Rebellion. At that point the Death Star orbited
the gas giant and was using its gravity to sling shot around to the side with
the moon. (A lot of people say the numbers don’t line when the characters are
reciting how long till the death star is in firing range and the distance number
on the display, however take into consideration that the Death Star was
accelerating around the planet and the numbers line up perfectly.)
No problem what good is all this “usless” knowledge if i can’t share.
