Yes that was Tarkin, the actor was intentionaly done up to look like a younger Peter Cushing.

So, the Death Star was “New” in Ep IV (its weapons needed a suitable target for testing), which means it took Luke’s lifetime (18 years?) to complete from how we saw it at the end of Ep III.

The Death Star at the end of Ep III had completlely different proportions leading to the conclusion that it was actually an early prototype built by the Seperatists. That was then followed up by an Imperial made prototype under Tarkin’s command before the “first Death Star” was finally constructed. See here for more information: http://www.theforce.net/swtc/ds/#catalogue

That means they must have started Death Star II shortly thereafter, say 5-6 years. But they make it seem like a “surprise!” in

The “Second Death Star” was constructed to about 60% (what we see in the movies) in 6 months. Mind you the “second death star” was also far larger that the first 1 and its 2 preceding prototypes but by this point they had all the kinks worked out of the design.

Ep VI when there’s a new one, as if they started it after the first one was destroyed. Surely the rebels knew there was another one cooking on a back burner somewhere. It’s hard to hide a project of that size that takes 18 or so years to complete.

See Above.

And why were Luke and Vader so much less agile than the Jedi in Eps I-III???

Luke didn’t know what he was doing and Vader was toying with him.

My biggest Star Wars question? At the end of Ep IV, why did the Death Star have to wait until the planet was out of the way to destroy the moon upon which the Rebels were hiding?

Because shooting through a Gas Giant to blow up an Earth sized moon requires more power than the “first Death Star” could provide.

Oh, yeah, it’s because it was a movie.

Yeah but where is the fun in that explanition. :-)

(...) Thanks for the clarification! And thanks also to James for the input! I was surprised to realize/suspect that it was Tarkin, because I'd seen the film four or five times and never noticed before. I think I was busy checking out the skeletal (...)
