Yes, and in fact, I remember the uproar that ensued when a re-release
came out with Episode IV/ANH on it (1). That little bit of info was
released by Lucas without any PR fanfare at all, it just kind of plopped
out as a reward to the movie goer! At that time, there had been
speculation that there would be a sequel, but no hard information that
it would be ESB.
Those numbers touched off wild discussions about the implications and
the notion that there would have to be prequels. Pretty heady and
exciting times.
1 - although I don't remember exactly when. I want to say 1979 but can't
be sure.
