Interior Doors?

I'm tearing my hair out trying to add internal doors to my latest MOC.
I have built several staterooms/cabins, but have been unable to come
up with a decent door mechanism.

The doors that Lego makes are not futuristic-looking enough for my
taste.  Also, just about all of the ones I have contain windows, which
is counter-productive for internal doors.

Sliding doors take up too much cubic.  I have built sliding doors for
two of the cabins, and those work well, but in other cases they would
make it impossible to achieve the layout I want.

Hinged doors (using 1x4 hinged bricks or plates) look very unrealistic
for interior doors - they're great for airlocks, or bank vaults, but
interior doors should be more lightweight.  Also, they take up a lot
of extra space in order to make sure they can open and close easily
and they require a wide hallway to open into.

What are some other ideas you have seen or used for addressing this
problem?  I'd be interested in any suggestions, or discussion of the
issues.

(...) What about a hinged door made of plates? You can use a 1x2 plate with handle attached to 1x1 plates with vertical clips as a hinge, or you can use the 2/3 finger hinges. Remember that 5 plates is the same height as 2 studs. Here are some (...) (23 years ago, 12-Jun-01, to lugnet.space)
