This makes me think of the small personnel transports that we see in Star
Trek 1 and 2 (the movies) where the small craft dock to a small round
docking port on the side of the ship. Sort of like externally mounted
escape pods that can be piloted around. That and then a larger more
universal style for larger vessels to join because it seems to be a
recurring theme where instantaneous matter transportation is just considered
silly and impossible in our models.
