Well, it's an evolution thing.
But if we're going for *actual* classic space sets, my first was:
Space Shuttle (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/442_1)
Which was always so lonely for one little spaceman, but confusing for there to
be two steering wheels. I mean, that's just a recipe for disaster.
My all-time favorite, wet-my-pants-when-I-got-the-holy-grail set was:
Galaxy Explorer (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/497)
A few years ago, I got a bunch of classic space sets at a yard sale:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=4901
While I didn't have them as a kid, both X-1 Patrol Craft
(http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6861_1) and the
Space Cruiser (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/487_1) have to be some of the coolest
sets from that time. Especially the beer cooler in the Cruiser - because in
.space, it's always Miller time.
