I've updated my web site with pictures of my lunar mining colony -
Copernicus City.

The Prologue and Chapter I show the inception and construction of the
initial base on my 4'x8' lunar landscape.  Future chapters will follow its
development into a thriving settlement and will include some "behind the
scenes" photos showing techniques used in the construction of the mountian.
(Some text related to the construction techniques was posted on 4/12/2000:

Brian,  Great Job!! Inspiring!! The story is very imaginative and ties
everything together very well. You must have put quite a bit of time into
planning the whole project (I read your link on Cbeams - very intersting -
I've done similar experiments but never to such scientific quality - bravo!).
I also wondered the link to trains - no longer! Your moonscape is beautiful! I
am looking forward to the next chapter. Have you already written it?

Wayne

The history of the colony has been divided into various stages of
development with the high level details of what happens during each stage.
(There's even a zoning plan to control what will go where.)  There are several
more stages to go, each of which will be a new chapter.  I know the plot I
want to pursue and build the scenes to support it.  Afterward I write the
final text.

My initial planning started in January (out of neccessity because I had to
wait until Christmas to open all the new track <g>). I knew I wanted a
mountian for the train to run through so I settled on an interesting track
pattern that would allow a large mountian and tunnel and was quickly led me
into designing CBeams.

After the extensive work to build the moonscape and track the way I wanted
them I had to take all the track up so as to photograph what it looked liked
before the mining colony got started!!  This required hiding the tunnel
entrances and other features, including some that are still hidden and that
will appear in future stages.  Next I had to put everything back in its
appropriate sequence taking photos along the way.

One feature about the track design is worth special mention: the track
layout is designed for the trains to run clockwise.  The points on all the
switches are set such that the only switch I ever need to flip is the one
closest to the large dark grey mountian (which houses the speed regulator).
On this layout I run a train past a switch and then reverse direction to move
onto the siding.  The switch I do flip controls whether the train takes the
outer loop up by the landing pad or the inner loop.  Normally this switch is
set to the outer loop and I have to wait until the train is off the outer loop
before I switch it to the inner loop.
