Americans may have supported it, but it was the political climate of the time
that paid for it. It was a race to beat the Russions, not as much a race to get
to the moon. Kennedy wasn't initially a huge fan of the space program(1), but
when it meant trumping the Soviets, he was all for it. If competition sparks
drive again, I say all the better.
