Any other ideas?

Maybe something like:

Best Newcomer Creation (for people who aren't the Space elite already)

I've never liked this business of separating people into "Space Elite"
because it makes the rest of us out to be newbs when really, we all exist on
a spectrum (and some of those "Elite" can still learn something from the
rest of us).  How would you determine who's "space elite" ?  Anything that
earns that award would probably be made by someone who is space elite, but
just not well known.  Maybe you could have a best sub-12 year old creation
(or 10 or 8?  I'm not sure what today's 8 - 12 year olds are capable of).

Most Innovative Space Model (ie, use of a piece in an innovative way, etc)

I like this, but broaden it to not include your comment of using a
particular piece in an innovative way.  Anything that looks like nothing
we've seen before should be elligable.

Best SpaceSHIP (for those >100 studs)

Sure!  (but it won't be me - I don't have the parts!)

Best Alien craft (for the strangest looking models)

There could be a lot of overlap between this and the Most Innovative
category.  I'd drop this one.

perhaps even subdivisions into themes? ie, Best Blacktron, best Futuron, • but
then again that would be too many awards, so forget that.

What about a Best pre-1990 style model?  That would limit design to anything
using CS, Fut, BT1, and SP1.

(...) Good points. I knew this might be the most contraversial of my ideas. The way I would divide an elite from a 'newcomer' would be 'newcomer to brickfest', ie. first time making the trip. but i guess that assumes any elite that would be there (...) (21 years ago, 1-Jul-03, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) I would tend to agree here. I'm not a newcomer and certainly don't fit into the elite category so this alienates a lot of us. I'm more inclined to go with the classics (best small, medium, etc) then have something like best alien craft or (...) (21 years ago, 1-Jul-03, to lugnet.space)
