This is the general idea for my universal docking port--the actual width can
be changed as wished (probably 6x6 for minifig, etc.).  I wanted to display the
arrangement of pegs & holes that work well.  This one design would work for
BOTH sides of the port -the ship & the station--that's the beauty of it--one
design that has male & female parts! & can be rotated at 90 degree increments.

Very nice concept.  But I fear it may not be practical in real
life. Eight Technic pegs will not pull apart easily, and the SNOT
technique will make it very difficult if not impossible to attach them
securely enough to withstand the force needed to pull the ships apart.

I think that Technic pegs may not be a very good mechanism for a
docking port.  I've got some ideas that are difficult to describe, so
I'll work on them and report back at a later date...

I was trying to show the concept quickly (ironicly, i was trying to improve on
your design, but i couldn't rmember where i saw it, so i couldn't give
credit!).  I had intended to do the math on a non-snot version for the exact
strength reason you mention.  also, maybe a part #3749-"Technic Axle Pin" could
be used instead of pins on four of the male parts, to reduce friction & keep
rotational stability.

(...) P.S. Thank you very much for replying to my post. I was anxiously awaiting any input & figured nobody saw it. I was very pleased with the concept & was disappointed that nobody (seemed) to notice it. Thanks again! jeff (22 years ago, 19-Jul-02, to lugnet.space)

(...) Yeah, those measures would help. But the docking rings I designed are very tough to separate, and usually required partial reassembly of at least one of the two craft once separated. Doubling the number of connects will only exacerbate that. (...) (22 years ago, 20-Jul-02, to lugnet.space)
