<much editing>

Ending it after Christmas sounds good.  How about midnight, Dec 31 - (that
is, the eve before newyear's eve).  I don't think judging will be that big a
problem if we keep the range of categories small, as you suggested.  I do
have one more category to add, though...

For categories, how about something along the lines of:
1: Small Ships (ie Invader)
2: Bigger Ships (ie Renegade)
3: Small Ground Vehicles (ie Alienator)
4: Bigger Ground Vehicles (ie Battrax)
5: Bases (ie Message Intercept)

6: Ugliest, Wackiest Thing In Space (anything under 1000 pieces is fair
game, no limit on having to look like Lego might have released it - the
wackier, the better - we're talkin' flying black and yellow combat boots)

For the sake of tradition, and because I enjoy having a category for the
funny stuff.  :)

Obviously, if we went with these categories then we'd have to define
"small".  And we need to decide whether there is an upper size limit. • Last
year we had a maximum size at around 1000 pieces.  This was because the
point of the contest was to design something that *could have been a set*
and Lego didn't make sets that big back then.

Well, here are some stats off Fibblesnork:

Meteor Monitor:   29 pieces
Alienator:              82
Invader:                156
Battrax:                 276
Renegade:             302
Msg Int Base:        562

I suggest that 225 pieces or so (pretty much right between Invader and
Battrax - wouldn't have to be a hard limit of exactly 225 or anything) be
the cutoff between large and small.  Maybe 800 pieces for size limit?  Or
1000.  Whatever.  I just have a hard time imagining Blacktron as larger than
800.  Maybe a base can go up to 1000.  This isn't my department anyway.   ;)

I agree with limiting voting to only those who enter, but I don't think more
entries should equal more votes.  And no voting for yourself.

My only other thought is with regards to raytraces: legal or no?  I like
raytracing as it lets those of us who don't quite have the pieces in the
colors we need to still build exactly as we like.  It also yields crystal
clear pictures with nice details at any angle.  Downsides are that it's
possible to build impossible models with impossible colors.  And does that
wedge piece with the BT logo (ie, the nose of Invader) exist in ldraw?

Here's a link to the original rules if anyone wants to see them for
reference:

What are your thoughts on actual judging?

So far we appear to have Jude volunteering to coordinate voting and Tom
volunteering for contest maintenance.  I'm still willing to help out with
rules and such.  On the other hand, I'm a busy guy and I'd quite happily
drop out.

I agree with ending after Christmas too. We could then have one week of
voting and wrap it up by January 7th. I do not want the voting to take • forever.

Jan 7th sounds good to me.
