I have been having problems with downloading to my RCX. I started trying
NQC on
a mac and this did not work.  I then ported NQC to Solaris and had some
initial
success, but there were still some problems (see below). I then borrowed
a
friends RCX in an attempt to see if was my RCX or the setup, and his RCX
worked fine with my mac and NQC. His RCX did not work with NQC and my
solaris
port.

I then tried my RCX with his PC and the Mindstorm software and everything
worked
fine!

Offhand, I'd suspect that the problem is either interference from
lighting in the room, or perhaps your IR tower is 'marginal'.  From your
tests so far it doesn't sound like the problem follows either a specific
computer or an RCX.

Minimize the amount of sunlight since it tends to interfere quite a lot.
Room light (especially from flourescent lights) typically isn't as big a
problem, but you may want to try the test with lights off to see if this
helps.

Has there been a design change introduced recently in the RCX? If so, the
new
Mindstorm firmware would recognize both the old and new versions, and the
third
party software might not. This would account for the symptoms.

The RCX was changed slightly, but the ROM is still the same (at least it
carries the same version number and Lego is still shipping the same
firmware for it).

Try running NQC in verbose mode (-v) and sending me the logs for when a
problem happens...

nqc -v -firmware FIRM0309.LGO

You can also try messing with the timeout value to see if it helps (you
specify the timeout in milliseconds rather than letting NQC use its own
adaptive algorithm):

nqc -t 1000 -firmware FIRM0309.LGO

(...) Unfortunately, the problem is not ambient light. I was trying this in a dark room at night. The only light source in the room was the monitor. I really think we can rule out the tower since my friends RCX loads with my IR tower just fine, and (...) (25 years ago, 3-Feb-00, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.nqc)
