One of my students accidently left a tied up gear train running for a while, i.e. In the midst of running a RCX, the case not only gets very hot, but also has a very strong plastic burning smell. (...) Whoops, I missed that there was a third option. I concur with this, as it's both the right voltage and confirmed AC. Usually AC will either say AC or have a ~ symbol. DC will either say DC or have a symbol that looks like = or _-_ -Rob A> (...) (19 years ago, 10-Jul-07, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)

(...) _ALWAYS_ assume DC on an actual power adapter (at least in the US). Most AC devices will just use a simple cord, like you'd find on a portable stereo. (...) The one used for the RCX may be, but the NXT power supply is sold as a different item, and is listed as a 10VAC adapter vs. the 9VAC adapters used by trains and various other systems. (...) I now have a Dynamic Instruments 16VAC 375mA, AT&T AC 9V 800mA, and a Black & Decker 9V 200mA from a Dust Buster but it does not say if it is DC or AC, I am assuming AC. Which one should I use?
