As I was smiling myself to sleep past midnight, I was thinking of rummaging
through my legos to find a part that would work. The antenna would do it. I'd
even suggest to the powers that be, to stick one in the Educational set. It
would work well as a tail for the Watch Dog model found in the Robotics
Engineering II Advanced Projects.
The process of elimination was beginning to point to the reset button as the
culprit. Choosing the metal punch tool as an actuator, I would admit, had
underpinnings of rage associated with it. Preserving the warranty on the NXT was
the balancing factor.
I teach at Ladd Acres on Friday mornings. It's a 12-hour Talented and Gifted
class. As opposed to other daytime classes I conduct after school at Title I
(under priveledged) schools, the students at Ladd Acres pretty much have college
in their hearts and minds. Girls are rare enough in Science Technology
Engineering and Math. So cultivating a desire to pursue STEM careers is an
important goal of the TAG program.
The Title I classes are sponsored by grants awarded through Saturday Academy. I
think I'm working off a $500K grant good for 5 years. Some of the the goals are
to increase high school graduation rates, increase school attendance, etc. It's
a different experience and challenge. But since I have the laptops and the
great NXTs, I seem to gain better student involvement than say, a creative
writing instructor.
This reset experience makes me wish for a RESET button in some of the Title I
kids. In one school, I have a pair of 6th grade boys that for the last six
hours, could not complete the basic NXT Edu Model using the printed
constructopedia. They just can't follow Lego's award winning illustrated
instructions!
The first day of class, I thought these guys were giving me the attitude and
pulling my legs. But after three class periods and the assistance of a school
counselor, I'm dumbfounded thinking how these kids have gotten through life so
far.
I asked these two "at risk" kids, in front of the flabbergasted school
counselor, how much TV they watched everyday. More than they sleep or otherwise
stay awake. It was so obvious!
So on the one end of the bell curve, the NXT inspires. On the other, it might
just help save a generation through remidiation.
