Look at something other than aluminium. Try the simple expedient of getting a
piece of rod the same diameter as a Lego axle, you will find that aluminium is
_very_ soft stuff, and will bend (and remain bent) far easier than the plastic
axles. Even a good alloy like 2024 in it's T3 or T5 hard state, is hard put to
match the existing plastic axles. Brass will work if you want a non magnetic
material that is 'better' than the plastic, but forget aluminium (think why
isn't aluminium used for axles, even on things like aircraft...).
