Is a CDROM really necessary for mindstorms?

Hi, I'm thinking about buying a Mindstorms set (I understand 1.0 is better than the 1.5 version), and I have an old Toshiba laptop that I can dedicate purely to Mindstorms use. Unfortunately it doesn't have a CDROM. If I transfer the contents of the (...) (25 years ago, 22-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) I highly recommend that you use NQC instead of the software on the CDROM. Which means the only thing you'll need off of the disc is the firmware image. (25 years ago, 22-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Yes, you can. I run the original on a AST 486 laptop without a CD drive. I have a pccard "scsi bus toaster" that I use to connect a CD drive when I install things. You can't do the video animiation stuff, which runs off the CD, but you can use the (...) (25 years ago, 22-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  First Lego League Software

JS Gregory wrote... (...) Are you sure? I just checked the FLL site and they are allowing RoboLab software, which I know is available from LEGO too. Oh, that's what you said in the last paragraph...sorry. In the note on the 2000 season, it seems (...) (25 years ago, 22-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) It's silly to allow RoboLab and not NQC. Robolab also supports variables and is also a lot more powerful than the RIS software. And, it's an extra cost thing. NQC is available for free to anyone. (25 years ago, 22-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Sorry about the initials mixup. (...) Here's a link. Check out the section on RoboLab at the bottom and they indicate new software for the spring... (URL) agree that the playing field should be as level as possible, but on the other hand, here's a (...) (25 years ago, 22-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) Just one question: In USA, the RIS 1.0 includes a Robolab? I buy mine in Brazil and it comes with one. []'z Zanette (25 years ago, 23-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: First Lego League Software

(...) The US version includes software called "RCX Code". This is a lot less powerful than Robolab, which comes with the educational version or can be bought seperately. (25 years ago, 24-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)
