    Strange "cartoon" gears? —Dave Johnson
I was perusing the web and found "Tim's Lego Pages" that showed his "Kitty Tormentor" robots: they shoot rubber bands. Very cool! The rubber bands are mounted on a kind of "cartoony" gear with widely spaced teeth, bright red. I thought at first it (...) (25 years ago, 11-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Strange "cartoon" gears? —Rob Hendrix
(...) I probably am mistaken, but I think those come from the old Samsonite Lego sets from the early 1960s. Most likely set 002 or 003. But, then again, I could have had a brain fart when I wrote this. Rob - Voice of the South (25 years ago, 11-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Strange "cartoon" gears? —Brent Rager
Yes, these gears are from the late 60s, I have quite a few as my parents kept my Legos. There is a white gear which just fits on the old small wheel (4 studs), a yellow gear which fits on the larger wheel, a larger blue gear, and the largest of the (...)       My mistake, should have waited to see the picture. These gears came after the ones I posted about previously (white, yello, blue, red) and used the technic holes and axels, but mesh with the older style gears. I only had one set of these (...) I think they are from a set which also included a motor, from the early '70s. They fit on technic axles. The set also (...) (25 years ago, 11-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Strange "cartoon" gears? —Mark Koesel
These gears were part of the original "Technical Building Sets" line that was never made available here in the US. All the gears have teeth counts which are multiples of 3. The red gears have 9 (3 x 3), the blue have 15 (3 x 5) and the yellow 21 (3 (...) (25 years ago, 14-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

What a wonderful post, Mark. Thank you so much. Forwarding to lugnet.faq. This could serve as the definitive entry for the question "What are these strange looking (pre-technic?) gears I've found?" (...) (25 years ago, 14-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics, lugnet.faq)

Ralph, The prices quoted are in Austrian shillings. Check out the 'S' symbol for the currency and the listed adress in Wien(=Vienna).    The Gears in question can also be seen in the last few pages of the LEGO idea book number "1". You can see the scans for this book at "Brickshelf.com" by looking up number 0221-1973. Thanks, Daniel (25 years ago, 14-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)
