Hi Jeremy,
I am replying to the whole list because I think others may want to comment
on my comments.  (Is that recursive?  :-)

()I don't quite understand where you get the $500 for a robot based on the
Basicx-24. The way I see it the price is $99 for the chip, Demo-Board,
cable and software.(for an even more cost effective price buy the • basicx-24
Download the sofware from the web site and make your own serial cable)

I got the price from Chris Harriman, the builder of Fluffy and Fluffy2, two
walking robots on the BasicX website.

Admittedly, Fluffy2 is an aggressive project.  It is a 6-legged walker, with
a human-tracking, scanning heat sensor.

However, you still need to purchase motors, build a platform (out of
something), buy servos, and (in the case of Fluffy) buy the walker itself.

()You can still use Lego parts for the main structure, no need for using • other
materials.

True...I am sure that some combination of BasicX kit parts and LEGO parts
could do the job....as long as you knew every parameter of the final project
at the outset.

()As for having to learn Basic. You might actually find that for any • project
more than something simple, the Mindstorms software is actually more • difficult
to use, one of the reasons most people seem to use the excellent NQC.

I fully expect to switch to NQC or (more likely) pbForth within a couple of
months of using my new RCX heavily.  But having an established, limited,
projet-oriented environment like the MindStorms kit to start with will get
me throught the initial "clumsy" stages much more quickly than starting with
BasicX.

I expect that I will always use MindStorms as my prototyping platform, and
then do the "heavy" work in a BasicX kind of environment.

Thoughts?  Comments?
- Christian

Hi Christian Glad to hear you've "taken the plunge" and bought a Lego Mindstorms Kit. It really is an incredible amount of fun (My wife thinks Ive bought it for my son). One or two quick points:- ()I don't quite understand where you get the $500 for (...) (25 years ago, 23-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics)
