Not that we're actually having an RFD here, but I would tend to disagree
with the idea of creating a separate group for RCX newbies. It's been said
before, and I think it merits repeating that if a newbie group existed,
there would not be the same number of RCX guru's reading it as read the more
advanced group. (There'd be some, of course, but not as many.) This
effectively reduces the potential chance of getting some questions answered
on such a group, because not everybody who knows how to answer a problem
will necessarily be interested in volunteering that information (either
because they feel that somebody else will, or because they can't be
bothered, or whatever). At the very least, it will lengthen the time it
takes to get a useful response from somebody.
With regards to lugnet.robotics being intimidating to some, well, yeah... I
can see that it might be, but this analogy comes to mind on that issue:
Consider learning to drive. If you don't actually get behind the wheel and
try to drive a car, you'll never learn how. For a lot of people, getting
behind the wheel of a car for the first time is quite terrifying, but they
do it anyways because they know that if they're going to succeed in it, they
have to jump right in with both feet and give it their best shot. And it's
exactly that point that I would like to make to those who find this
newsgroup a bit too technical: Jump right in with both feet and get
involved. Don't be afraid of ridicule (because most of the people here are
mature enough that you wouldn't get made fun of anwyays). Ask your
questions, wait for a response, and if the answers are too technical, ask
for clarification. Keep trying, and your perseverance will pay off.
Remember that nothing worthwhile has ever been achieved without going
outside a "comfort zone".

| There seems to be a lot of discussion about creating new groups lately. I would like to see a new robotics group. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with lugnet.robotics, but the level of most of the discussion in there is way over my head. I (...)
