I’ll throw one more suggestion on top of that.  Take a standard LEGO cable, cut
it in half, and put a standard adaptor on the end (such as a RJ11).  One LEGO
cable can be used to produce two adaptor cables.  From there you can create all
the custom cables you want using standard adaptors and crimpers.  Then all you
need is a standard coupler to connect your cables.
A very flexible solution... with the only problem that it is a bit bulky.

You can also use standard
swiveling couplers (sometimes called phone detanglers) to create cables that can
spin without getting twisted (which can be important to moving robots).

Oh... nice little devices you make me discover! They would be wonderful through
a technic turntable. But all of these gizmos I've seen on the web have only 4
contacts (NXT wires have 6), do you know some of them with 6 contacts?

Also, I fear some rapid wear if used with motors in heavy duty applications
(high currents)

(...) Alas, I've only seen the phone ones. I used one through a turntable with the RCX cables, but of course that's only two wires. (Actually I used all four wires and basically sent two RCX cables through the one "detangler"). I would imagine they (...) (19 years ago, 10-May-06, to lugnet.robotics)
