Ill throw one more suggestion on top of that. Take a standard LEGO cable, cut
it in half, and put a standard adaptor on the end (such as a RJ11). One LEGO
cable can be used to produce two adaptor cables. From there you can create all
the custom cables you want using standard adaptors and crimpers. Then all you
need is a standard coupler to connect your cables. You can also use standard
swiveling couplers (sometimes called phone detanglers) to create cables that can
spin without getting twisted (which can be important to moving robots).
