Most probably the springs blades that make connection from batteries to RCX
board are bent (See photo 4 of Bob tutorial).

   That was exactly it - the rear spring terminal, although it appeared fine,
was evidently just barely bent too high by the impact. I removed the
circuitboard, pushed both battery clips down slightly, and rebuilt the unit. It
works! The power button is slightly sticky, but I just probably should have
cleaned it.

   Yes, no solder (although thank you John for the suggestion! Are any of the
models soldered?). And (with the help of Bob's tutorial) remarkably easy to
disassemble.
