Most probably the springs blades that make connection from batteries to RCX
board are bent (See photo 4 of Bob tutorial). Though these blades are not
normally soldered to the board (despite John's post ;o), you may solder them to
make sure the contact is good.

Going in and soldering them was one of my fixes for intermittent battery
problems now I come to remember.

Which then just leads you to the next problem which is when they unsolder again
.......
