Fw: RcxCC Joystick controls —Tom Rowton
I've given a bit of thought to the line of sight prob with the IR receiver on the RCX and have come up with an idea that should help, as long as the RCX and the IR tower have line of sight, no matter which direction the RCX is facing. Lego purists - (...) (25 years ago, 7-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

IR Line of Sight (was: Re: Fw: RcxCC Joystick controls) —Don Hewitt
I've had pretty good results by elevating the IR Tower (it stands on the computer desk), pointing the IR Tower toward the center of the room, and mounting the RCX so that its IR port is pointing up (make sure it is the highest point on the robot). (...) (25 years ago, 7-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Sending to you directly b/c lugnet won't recognize my posts (though I've already registered with them!). Assuming the walls and ceiling of your room are painted white (I read someone quoting >70% reflectivity for IR w/ white surfaces). Would the (...) (25 years ago, 7-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: IR Line of Sight (was: Re: Fw: RcxCC Joystick controls) —Jim Moran
This is similar to what I have done. My IR tower is on a table, about 2.5 feet off the ground. It faces the center of the room, bouncing off a wall that is about 10-12 feet from the tower. The RCX is lying flat on the top of the robot platform, and (...) (25 years ago, 8-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

That will give you a three dimensional spread which you would need for a table-leg-climbing or flying RCX. If you always run your rcx on the floor, an (...)         Re: RcxCC Joystick controls —Chris Alas
I have an interesting idea. . . What if you were to use the new gold dome that is included with the new space sets as that ball your were talkign about? maybe since it is coated in gold, if could bounce the IR light into the RCX, and it IS a lego (...)         Re: RcxCC Joystick controls —Chris Alas
Yes! my idea worked! all you need to do is get the gold half-ball that comes in one of the space sets and mount it on top of the IR sensor! Voila, a go-anywhere robot!! (25 years ago, 8-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

No problem! I was just too lazy to get up and check the name. . . Also, if you have Mindstorms, you should try the gold dome thingy (what is the name if it!?), it's VERY cool driving around the house. Next up: small CCD camera. . . . -Chris Shane (...)    Yes! You can order via S@H. In fact, the Jan 99 catalog says to "Call and reserve yours TODAY!". The SW sets won't actually ship until the end of February and won't all ship at once. I've already ordered one of each. :) (...) (25 years ago, 8-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)
