I don't understand why you'd choose a wheel with such a wide 'grippy'
tire.  You want the wheel to spin on the spot with minimum friction,
so wouldn't you want to use a large pulley with a thin tire?

Sure, you can make a caster with the pulley wheel and thin tire though I
think it is a little less elegant.  For one thing, since the pulley wheel is
only 1/2 unit wide, it will slop around unless you use a longer axle and
bushings on the ends to keep it centered.  The pulley wheel is also larger
in diameter so it requires a slightly different construction in the caster
assembly to keep it from rubbing.

BTW, I do have robots that use the pulley wheel as caster.

(...) A better idea yet is to use the pulley wheel without a tire. There is no need for traction in the caster. A hard plastic wheel allows the caster to act like a skid sometimes and minimizes the caster steer experienced when straightening out (...) (22 years ago, 18-Mar-03, to lugnet.robotics)
