Bruce,

My opinions are do not necessarily reflect those of my employer.

The correct link for the quote is:
http://www.greenfieldgroup.com/something_archive.asp?story=13

The article has to do specifically with the fast food business, not traditional
product manufacturing or retail sales.  It talks about how fast food places pull
customers in with gimmicks and then push them out the door, so to speak.

The passion you have for your creation is great, and truly admirable.  I applaud
your strong belief in your product.  And no, I don't think you're nuts for
making the JCX.  I just think you're nuts for wanting $500 for a base system
that controls 8 sensors and 4 motors in real-time when that same goal can be
accomplished with a much, much cheaper solution.

It doesn't matter how good/bad your service/support is if you are the only place
the JCX comes from and supports it.

My job involves supporting computer systems.  I see people/places willing to
throw away computers just because they upgraded to something newer--nothing
wrong with the 2-year-old system.  Laptops are cheaper to replace than fix
outside of warranty (esp. if the screen is damaged)--yet work fine with an
external monitor.  In my world, recycling laptops for robotics makes perfect
sense (to me, anyway).

I'm sure that in your world of dealing with college funded projects, what you
ask for the JCX seems reasonable.  Guess I'll just have to suffer with using an
unsupportable PII233 laptop until I have $500 to toss into the wind (or spend on
a JCX).

You'll start getting my attention when the JCX drops to around $200.

For under $100 one can tap into more power and features from the guts of a

But how do you *really* feel?

Sorry to rain on the JCX parade, but I don't see $500 worth of features or
value for me.

Maybe you are the kind of person who would rather roll their own, as your
remarks imply, and that's fine too. Diversity makes the world interesting.  And
you are not the first person to think we are nuts to create JCX.

I went to your greenfieldgroup website and found this advice in this article:

Here's a daring and novel concept . . . how about a concerted focus on good ol'
cordial, friendly service? "That's not differentiating," you say. "It can be
copied too easily." We're not so sure about that and, more importantly, no one
seems to have succeeded at it yet.

Perhaps along with JCX we can provide better customer service and support than
you would get if you built your Legos around a  $100 laptop with a cracked
screen.  We'll do our best.
