So I'm about to buy a starter kit.  As far as I know, what I need is "Robotics
Invention System 1.5".

Yep - that's the one you want.

But I'm having trouble finding it.

Could it be that Lego is working on a new brick based on the WINTEL technology ?
In that case a release will always be later as planned.

When Lego announced their signing a deal with Microsoft to cooperate on software
products, several people on this list wrote to Lego asking about that.  I was
told that they ONLY intend to use M$ technology in their computer games - Mindstorms
was not a part of that deal.

(Did anyone else hear the story on NPR today about the BILLIONS of Lego bricks
that are floating around in mid-Atlantic after falling off the side of a container
vessel?  Anyone up to a salvage mission! :-)  They estimate it may be 10 to 20 years
before they eventually start washing onto beaches).
