How long will a NiMH hold a charge if not used?  If they completly

I've been using NiMH batteries in just about everything - and I've been
very happy with them.  Their only significant drawback (that I've found
so far) is that they take a lot longer to charge than NiCd's.  So I keep
plenty of spares and always have some in my charger.

About a year ago we switched over to AA and AAA batteries from
www.thomasdistributing.com, using the Maha MH-C204F fast charger. It also
comes with a 12V car adapter. We use them for Palms, flashlights, portable
phones, digital cameras, robot motors, etc. All told we must have 50+ cells
in circulation.

I also got one of their solar chargers and took it on a llama backpacking
trip to charge digital camera batteries. It actually did work in spite of
mostly cloudy days.

The do seem to self-discharge more than alkalines. We use the fast Maha
charger and, yes the downside is the batteries get hot. Solution: take off
the plastic cover from the charger and throw it away. Now the batteries stay
cool. Recharge time is 1-3 hours depending on how flat they are.

It doesn't hurt them to recharge before they are completely exhausted so
that's what we usually do, since the device in use (except flashlights)
usually quits working well before the batteries are really "flat".

The NiMH AAs in digital cameras last as long or longer than disposable
lithiums (very $$$), and many times longer than industrial alkalines. Bursts
of high current seem to be ideal for the NiMH.
