(...) we use superb.net for peeron - they user apache on solaris, and qmail for their email stuff. they're ok, though, of course, not as good as having your own box to run. maybe a bunch of AFOLs should chip in, get a colo and a server, and host our (...) (...) I agree that BMP's are unsuited for web publishing. As you say, it is better to use compressed GIF, PNG of JPEG, depending on the kind of image. (...) What version of Netscape do you use? I use Mozilla 0.9.8 and came up almost instantly. (Netscape 4.7, otoh, was hopeless.) If you're using a Netscape 6 and seeing this problem, try upgrading to a Mozilla build. (23 years ago, 31-Mar-02, to lugnet.publish)
